The University of Alabama at Birmingham initially engaged Charles Williams & Associates, Inc. to provide architectural and engineering services for the renovation of an existing building to accommodate the university's ROTC program.

After acquiring an abandoned property that divided Lawson State's Birmingham Campus into two sectors, east campus and west campus, CWA was commissioned to design and oversee construction of a new 60,000sf student center that would unify the campus and serve as a focal point for student facilitation and activity.
